When I was younger, my
grandmother had a rose bush in her front yard. I had been warned not to
touch them, but one day I decided to disobey her and reach into the bush, only
to prick my finger on a thorn. Oh, it hurt, and oh how I cried from the
pain, especially when I saw blood coming from my finger! Of course, my
grandmother came to my rescue and bandaged my finger but not without scolding
me for disobeying her and warning me to keep my hands off the roses!
What I didn’t know then that I
know now is that the thorns on a rose represent divine order. The bloom
of a rose is beautiful, but the thorn of a rose produces pain. Thorns hurt us
yet, yet they humble us and humility keeps us right where we need to be – that
is the beauty of a thorn!
